The tropical rainforests of West Africa, Brazil, Latin America and Southeast Asia are some of the most important environmental regions of the world. They hold millions of unique plants, animals, and people. However, they are being destroyed rapidly.
Several factors are contributing to the destruction of the rainforests. One of the main causes is logging. Millions of trees are cut down every year, often illegally. The most valuable wood is taken and not replaced. Mining is another reason. Mining companies cut down trees to get gold and other minerals. Their activity often causes pollution.
Rainforest destruction has many serious effects. A tragic effect of the loss of the rainforests is the extinction of plants and animals that could provide us with food, medicine or valuable products. Thousands of species disappear each year. One surprising result of the destruction of the rainforests is that nutrients in the soils are washed away. When the trees are cut down, the soil is exposed to the heavy rain and quickly becomes infertile and useless. One of the most serious effects is global warming. This can have huge consequences for the world’s climate.
In summary, rainforests are important for the environment. They are potentially a huge source of materials. However, human activities are damaging this treasure. If we do not take action now, this vital part of our heritage will be lost forever.

Long long ago, there lived in Greece a king whose name was Midas. He was a greedy man and loved gold better than anything else in the world.
One day, he asked a god to give him more gold. The god decided to punish him and said, “Your wish is granted already. Everything you touch will turn to gold. ”
Midas was overjoyed when he heard this. The next morning, he got up early to test his skill. When he touched his bed, it turned to gold. “Gold!” cried Midas, laughing like a naughty little boy. “It works !”
Not only stones, flowers and the furniture of his house turned to gold, but when he sat down to table, so did the food he ate and the water he drank. He was unhappy now. Just then his laughter ran up to him. Midas touched her hand. At once her body became cold and stiff. Midas was holding a gold statue!
At last, he begged the god to free him from his wish. “Go to the river and bathe in it,” the god said. So Midas did, and the water took away his gold touch. He would never forget this lesson: X did not bring happiness.

Three Types of Parents
It is universally true that all parents in the world love their children. However, as parents’ views of life vary, they show their love in different ways. Generally speaking, parents can be classified into three types: the monarch type, the servant type, and the friend type according to their different ways of showing their love to their children.
The parents belonging to the monarch type are intolerant, bossy and self- centered. They lay down regulations in the family for their children to observe. Furthermore, they insist that their children should act upon them without question. With a firm belief in their own philosophy of life, they have little respect for others’ opinions, least of all, their children’s.
Contrary to the monarch- type parents, the servant- type parents revolve around their children all the time. They are soft, good- natured, and easy- going. They never deny their children any wish, and cheerfully run to buy anything their children ask for. They are happy so long as their children are content. With the sincere belief that love means sacrifice, they are ready to give up anything for their children’s sake. With their children at the center of their lives, they always ask, “What else can I do for you?”
The friendly- type parents, as the term implies, treat their children as friends. They are generous and wise. Like good friends, they discuss with their children the latest news, share their children’s interests, and listen attentively to their children’s expression of emotion, whether it is anger, fear, joy or sorrow.
71.(1)The three types of parents are ____________________.
(2) The sentence the monarch- type parents say most frequently to their children is,“_________.”

七、概括大意(本大题共2小题,每小题5分,共10分)(请按要求概括段落大意。)
72. Passage 1
Everyone has family members and everyone loves their family. But from my point of view, this kind of love is very different from other types. When people are around their families they are their real selves. “Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind. ” Families will always love you no matter what happens, or no matter how bad you screw up, your family will always be there to back you. That is true love and there is an unbreakable bond that no one can really explain or come between.
(1) This paragraph is mainly about ____________________.
73. Passage2
The danger of diet products lies not only in the psychological effects they have on us, but also in the physical harm that they cause. Diet foods can indirectly harm our bodies because consuming them instead of healthy foods means we are preventing our bodies from having basic nutrients. Diet foods and diet pills contain zero calory only because the diet industry has created chemicals to produce these wonder products. Diet products may not be nutritional, and the chemicals that go into diet products are potentially dangerous.
