My love-hate relationship with reading
When I was younger, I loved to read. I could get through a whole book in a day, and used to begmy parents every night to let me stay up later so I could just finish my chapter. From fairytales tothrillers, non-fiction to plays, I devoured any literature that I could get my hands on.However, while there are many books for younger children, once you reach your mid-teens theoptions become limited. I found myself choosing between books for children that were silly and patronizing, and adult books that I couldn't quite understand.
This lack of choice eventually led me to read less and less. When I was in secondary school, theonly books I read were ones we were assigned in English class, and I was never very enthusiastic aboutmy teacher's choices. I thought too much discussion of symbolism and themes ruined the book. Maybethe sky being blue didn't represent or foreshadow anything; maybe it was just a description! Rather than instilling a love of literature in me, it made me vow never to pick up a book again.
Fortunately, I realised very quickly that deciding to go to university meant that I had signed upfor four years of reading books. I reluctantly chose a French literature module in my first year. I startedout grumpy, determined not to enjoy any of the works we were studying over the course of the year. However, I soon realised that at a university level, the discussion was more fruitful and the books moreinteresting, and I found I had a lot to say! Books with women as the main characters especiallyinterested me, and being able to discuss my thoughts with other people meant that I could betterunderstand the subtle aspects of the plot: yes, even the symbolism and themes.
I began reading again for pleasure, starting with Malcolm X's autobiography and never looking back. Now, during my year abroad, I spend a lot of my spare time in bookshops and reading in cafes, and even attend a monthly book club with some other language assistants.
Reading is a great way to escape, broaden your horizons, improve your vocabulary and use your imagination: I'm so happy that I rediscovered my love of books.

Detroit: Then and Now
1)The city of Detroit, in the USA, was once compared to Paris. It had broad rivers, smart streetsand historically important architecture. Then, in the 20th century, it became "Motor City". For a time, most of the world's cars were made there. There was regular work and a good salary in the motorindustry. A worker at one of the car factories could someday buy a house, a boat, maybe even a holidaycottage. A new middle class was born in Detroit.

3)What went wrong in Detroit? The population fell for several reasons. Partly, it was becausepeople moved to the suburbs in the 1950s. Then there were the shocking riots in 1967, which scaredmore people away. Then there was the dramatic fall in car manufacture as companies like GeneralMotors and Chrysler faced huge difficulties. And finally, in 2008, came the global financial crisis.
4)Many of Detroit's people are poor-half of the city's families live on less than a modest sum ayear. In 2013 the city did something unusual: it declared itself bankrupt. It was the largest bankruptcyin US history, at approximately S18 billion in debt. Now the city is fixing its streetlights soneighborhoods feel safer. It has replaced about 40,000 streetlights. The police arrive in answer to callsin less than 20 minutes now, instead of the hour it used to take.
5)About a hundred empty houses are demolished each week to make space for new buildingsWith the nation's biggest city bankruptcy behind it, Detroit is also attracting investors and youngadventurers. The New Economy Initiative gave grants of $10,000 to each of 30 new small businesses. It seems that every week a new business opens in Detroit-grocery stores, juice bars, coffee shops, even bicycle makers. Teaching Children to Spend Pocket Money Wisely
School-going children need pocket money for food, stationery and bus fares. Parents give pocketmoncy to their children in different ways. Some give a lump sum at the beginning of a month or aweek. Others prefer to give pocket money on a daily basis. [26】 On the other hand, the children'sspending habits may affect how pocket money is given.
Pocket money given on a daily basis is sometimes termed as "food money". Children usually usethe pocket money to buy food during recess and also at lunch hour if they have school activities in theafternoon. They learn how to manage small sums of money. [27] Some parents choose this method of allocating pocket money in order to prevent their children from overspending, hoping that in time they can be trusted with larger sums of money.
Giving pocket money on a daily basis places responsibilities of budgeting on the parents, insteadof the child. The child may spend every single cent of the daily pocket money by overindulging in junkfood, as they know they will get another sum of money the next day. This results in children beingshortsighted in their spending. The thought of saving money never crossed their minds. [28] Othersspend more than they are given. They borrow from their siblings or their classmates when they feellike indulging themselves. Then they may ask for money to pay off their debts. This habit of spendingmore than they can earn occurs often and in such instances the purpose of rationing is defeated.
Children need to learn how to budget their money. The key to doing this is to differentiate between needs and wants. [29] This habit, when inculcated since young, stands them in good stead when they start working and eamning their own money. It enables them to resist the temptation of "buy now and pay later" schemes.
Formation of any habit starts at a tender age. There is no better way to teach children to managemoney than to start with their pocket money. They need to learn the importance of budgeting rightfrom kindergarten days. [30] When children learn to spend within their means, they are able to manage their finances well later in their lives.
A. It is a good idea to start with daily pocket money and move on to monthly pocket money.
B. The way in which pocket money is given affects how money is spent or saved.
C. Buy the necessities first, and indulge ourselves only if there is money left.
D. As the money is limited, they have to control their spending.
E. Parents who earn daily wages may also opt for this due to financial constraints.
F. They may develop the mentality that money is meant to be spent.
